Culloden Battlefield Visitor Centre - Culloden was the last hand-to-hand battle fought on British soil. Part of a wider European religious and political conflict, the short but bloody fight changed the course of history. Today the causes and consequences of the Forty-Five are still hotly debated. Cawdor Castle - Cawdor. A magical name, romantically linked by Shakespeare with Macbeth. A superb fairy-tale Castle, and just what every visitor is looking for - Scottish history that you can touch and see and sense for yourself. The Clava Cairns - The site of an exceptionally well preserved group of prehistoric burial cairns that were built about 4,000 years ago. The Bronze Age cemetery complex comprises of passage graves, ring cairns, kerb cairn, standing stones in a beautiful setting and the remains of a chapel of unknown date. www.historic-scotland.gov.uk
Fort George - Quite simply the finest example of 18th-century military engineering you’ll find anywhere in the British Isles. This vast garrison fortress was begun in the aftermath of the Battle of Culloden (1746), which crushed the final Jacobite Rising. www.historic-scotland.gov.uk
Brodie Castle - Set in peaceful parkland, this fine 16th-century tower house is packed with enough art and antiques to keep connoisseurs happy all day. It contains fine French furniture; English, continental and Chinese porcelain; and a major collection of paintings, including 17th-century Dutch art, 19th-century English watercolours, and early 20th-century works. www.nts.org.uk
Elgin Cathedral - One of Scotland’s most beautiful medieval buildings, Elgin Cathedral is a magnificent ruin, much of which dates back to the 13th century. Its many outstanding architectural features include the country’s finest octagonal chapter house. www.historic-scotland.gov.uk
